The T Square
This is a simple device that can provide a test of aiming accuracy as well provide an ideal practice setup.
Initially, I like to test players' aiming skills if they show this as a challenge during the initial computerized portion of their introductory session with me. I ask them to find a straight putt from approximately 10 feet from the cup. They are instructed to aim the T Square at the cup by placing it on the ground. When done, the player isn't allowed to stand back and adjust it. We then evaluate their aiming accuracy by using the aim aid, a laser or just standing back and looking at the direction of their aim.
Now, once the initial aim is noted, the player uses the device to practice better aim. To do this, lay the T Square down so it's correctly aimed at the cup. After this, it becomes the player's challenge to find how this appears correct to them! To do this, they may need to squat down, close one eye or the other, or move their head so that one eye, not their nose, is directly on the target line. This becomes the way they aim, whether it be the ball's logo or a spot in front of the ball.
Additionally, this can be a tool to assist the player's ability to see the correct aim at address. Again, place the T Square down accurately pointing at the cup. Now, take a sharpie and draw a line using the front edge of the T Square as your guide. Then, remove the T Square and place a ball in front of the line. Then place the putter face parallel to the line drawn. This is the correct aim and the player may feel this is “off-center!” It is now that the player must find a head and eye position that allows them to match their perception with the reality of correct aim.
This is a simple, but great tool for practice putting and improving your aiming skills.
